Road Development Agency (RDA) Engineers were yesterday among other Engineers that took part in the on-the-job training demonstration of conducting Special Bridge Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) also known as drones at Chirundu Bridge.

The Training was being done under the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Technical Cooperation Project on “Bridge Maintenance Capacity Building in Zambia Phase II.

Other participants were from Zambia Railway Limited (ZRL), Zimbabwe Department of Road (DoR) and JICA Zambia office.

Speaking when he opened the training, JICA Zambia Assistant Resident Representative, Kenta Mikami said Bridge and Rail infrastructure were key to supporting the smooth transportation for goods and services thereby boosting the economy of the country.

Mr. Mikami said maintenance of Bridge and road infrastructure was, therefore, critical to connectivity.

“It is my hope that the knowledge which will be gained will be used to better the maintenance works,” he said.

 

Drone experts from SRDP Consulting Inc. display the drones before dispatching them on the inspection mission.

 

 

Representing RDA, Principal Engineer Gerald Phiri said the exercise was important and would help build on capacity in the area of Bridge maintenance.

During the theoretical presentation, JICA team leader Hideo Nagao delved on Special Bridge Inspection, JICA Deputy Team Leader Seiya Hikino looked at the summary of Inspection of Special Bridges using Drones and SRDP Consulting Inc. President and Team Leader Joel Cruz focused on Planning for Special Bridge Inspection using Drones and Equipment and Introduction of Operation of Drones.
