The Road Development Agency (RDA) has substantially completed the construction of the six lines of 2400 x 2400 millimeters portal culverts at Chiwena crossing along the Mumbwa to Landless Corner Road in Central Province.
The project which recommenced in June 2023 was being constructed under Force Account by the RDA Central Regional Office.
The works were motivated by the need to increase the capacity of the existing box culverts comprising two lines of 1600 x 2000 millimeters which were failing to handle the increased water due to climate change conditions. As a result, the crossing point was partially washed away on January 18, 2023.
The scope of works included but was not limited to the following:
- Dismantling of the temporal ACROW Bridge;
- Excavation works;
- Concrete works;
- Installations of six lines 2400 x 2400 millimeters portal culverts;
- Erosion protection works;
- Road surfacing works; and
- Ancillary works.
Physical progress stands at 98% and the crossing point has been opened to traffic. The remaining minor works involve ancillary work such as signage and road markings.
