As a short-term measure, road maintenance works are currently underway along the Great East Road, covering the stretch from Airport Roundabout in Lusaka to Luangwa Bridge in Lusaka Province.
The Road Development Agency (RDA) has engaged a consultant to undertake a feasibility study for the full rehabilitation of the 225-kilometre Great East Road stretch from Lusaka to Luangwa Bridge.
The full rehabilitation works will commence once the designs have been completed and a contractor has been engaged.
In the meantime, through its Lusaka Provincial Office, the RDA has deployed three teams along the 225-kilometre stretch to undertake pothole patching and other routine road maintenance works.
The first team is stationed at Luangwa Bridge and is working towards Rufunsa Boma, covering the section around Mpanshya. Good progress has been recorded in this section.
The second team is camped at Chinyunyu and is working from Kanyongoloka 1 towards Chongwe Town.
The third team is working from Airport Roundabout in Lusaka towards Chongwe Town.
Meanwhile, the RDA Lusaka Provincial Office is conducting tests at the Nyamphande section, where rehabilitation works on the deteriorated section are scheduled to commence by early September 2026.
