Road Development Agency (RDA) Director and Chief Executive Officer, Eng. Nelson Chuma, says the upgrading of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road to bituminous standard will stimulate economic activity by improving the movement of agricultural produce to markets and supporting mining, tourism, trade and investment in Central Province.
Eng. Chuma said the improved road infrastructure will also enhance access to schools, health facilities and other essential public services, ultimately improving the quality of life for communities in the province.
Speaking during the signing of the contracts today, Eng. Chuma described the development as another important milestone in the Government’s continued investment in strategic transport infrastructure.
Lot 1 involves the upgrading of approximately 75 kilometres of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road and 10 kilometres of selected urban roads in Kabwe District, Central Province. The works will be undertaken by Lushion Investment Limited in Joint Venture with Nchifar Enterprise under a 24-month contract.
Lot 2 covers the upgrading of approximately 80 kilometres of the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road and 10 kilometres of selected urban roads in Ngabwe District, also under a 24-month contract.
“The award reflects the Government’s determination to accelerate the delivery of quality road infrastructure that supports economic growth, improves connectivity and enhances the livelihoods of our people,” Eng. Chuma said.
“The signing of this contract is a clear demonstration of the Government of the Republic of Zambia’s unwavering commitment to investing in infrastructure as a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, regional integration and inclusive national development.”
Eng. Chuma noted that the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road is a strategic transport corridor linking Kabwe and Ngabwe districts, as well as surrounding communities.
“Once upgraded, this road will provide a reliable all-weather transport corridor that will significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety and lower vehicle operating costs,” he said.
Meanwhile, Nchifar Enterprise Managing Director Farai Mwanamakondo said the Kabwe-Ngabwe Road has deteriorated over many years and remained in poor condition.
“Road users have faced significant challenges, particularly during the rainy season, when some sections become difficult or completely impassable. The poor state of the road has disrupted the movement of people, agricultural produce and goods, while increasing transport costs and limiting economic opportunities in the region,” Mr. Mwanamakondo said.
And Lumandwe Resources Director Onno Munshya thanked the Government and the RDA for the opportunity to participate in the project.
“We will not take this opportunity for granted and are committed to delivering the project to the highest standards,” Mr. Munshya said.
