Speaking during a media tour of the project in Mwense District today, Road Development Agency (RDA) Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager, Anthony Mulowa, described the development as a strategic regional trade corridor aimed at improving cross-border traffic flow, enhancing logistics efficiency and promoting economic integration within the region.
The project is being implemented under a Concession Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Zambia, through the Road Development Agency, and GED Africa Zambia Limited, with an estimated project cost ceiling of approximately US$260 million.
The concession period is 25 years, comprising three years for construction and 22 years for operation and maintenance. The concession commencement date was triggered on March 27, 2025.
Mr. Mulowa said physical works on the project commenced on May 30, 2024 and were expected to be completed by the beginning of the third quarter of 2027.
He further noted that significant progress has been recorded on the Luapula Bridge, which is currently 60 percent complete, with construction activities advancing more rapidly on the Zambian side of the structure.
Construction of the OSBP is also progressing, with works ongoing on both the border facilities and the associated access roads. The OSBP is scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2027.
Once completed, the Kasomeno–Mwenda Project is expected to improve regional trade, reduce transport costs and travel times, facilitate the efficient movement of goods and people, and enhance economic opportunities for communities on both sides of the border.
Earlier on, GED Africa Zambia Country Manager, Eng. Kanyuka Mumba made a presentation giving an update on the works being undertaken at site.
The Kasomeno–Mwenda Project is one of the region's most significant transport infrastructure investments and is designed to provide a direct link between Zambia's Copperbelt Province and the southern regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The development includes a new road corridor, the Luapula Bridge crossing, and a One-Stop Border Post that will streamline customs and immigration procedures.
The project is expected to serve as an important alternative route for regional and international trade, improving access to markets, reducing congestion on existing border crossings and supporting the growth of mining, agriculture and other key economic sectors.
