The announcement was made on Wednesday afternoon by the RDA Director and Chief Executive Officer Eng. Nelson Chuma, during the engagement meeting. Eng. Chuma said the Agency greatly appreciates the proposal by Lumwana Mining Company Limited to finance the maintenance of the strategic road section as a contribution towards the improvement of public road infrastructure.
"This commitment demonstrates the important role that collaboration between Government institutions and the private sector can play in addressing infrastructure needs and supporting Zambia's economic development," Eng. Chuma said.
The T5 Road is a key economic artery for the North-Western Province, serving not only the mining sector but also agriculture, trade, and tourism.
Eng. Chuma emphasized that the Mutanda Junction-Lumwana Mine section is particularly important because it serves Lumwana Mining Company, surrounding communities, and other road users.
"Its maintenance will therefore contribute towards improving mobility, facilitating economic activities and providing a safer and more reliable road connection," he added.
Eng. Chuma was quick to reassure the public that the private sector involvement does not mean privatization of the road. "I wish to emphasise that the Mutanda Junction-Lumwana Mine section of the T5 Road will remain public property at all times. The road will continue to serve the general public as part of Zambia's public road network," he stressed.
On behalf of the RDA, Eng. Chuma commended Lumwana Mining Company Limited, led by its Country Manager, Mr. Anthony Malenga, for demonstrating corporate responsibility through its willingness to invest in the routine maintenance of the important road section.
"Such collaboration complements Government's efforts to improve road infrastructure across the country and demonstrates what can be achieved when the public and private sectors work together towards a common objective," he said.
Eng. Chuma concluded by thanking Lumwana Mining Company Limited for the initiative and said RDA looks forward to close cooperation between RDA, the mining company, consultants, contractors and all relevant stakeholders throughout the implementation of the works, as well as the timely commencement and successful completion of the project.
"As the Road Development Agency, we remain committed to ensuring that Zambia has a safe, efficient and sustainable road network that supports economic growth, facilitates trade and improves connectivity," Eng. Chuma said.
Meanwhile, Barrick Lumwana Mining company Limited has committed over Five-Milllion for the routine maintenance of the strategic Mutanda Junction of Lumwana Mine entrance section of the T5 road in North-Western Province.
Barrick Lumwana Mining Company Limited Country Manager Mr. Anthony Malenga Country Manager said the partnership marks an important milestone in strengthening the relationship between Lumwana company and the Government.
“To the CEO of RDA, it is a pleasure to join you today as we formalize our partnership with RDA for the maintenance of the T5 road from Mutanda junction to the Lumwana Mine entrance,” he said.
Mr. Malenga noted that the T5 Road is an important transport corridor not only for Lumwana Mine but also for surrounding communities, businesses and the general public.
"Its maintenance will improve road safety, reduce vehicle operating costs and support the efficient movement of people, goods and services," he said.
The Country Manager emphasized that while the road is critical to the mine's operations, its value extends far beyond the mine.
"We therefore view this investment as part of our broader responsibility to support the communities in which we operate and to contribute meaningfully to Zambia's development," Mr. Malenga said.
He reiterated Lumwana's commitment to working closely with RDA, Government and other stakeholders to ensure the works are completed safely and to the required standard.
