The project is being undertaken by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (Z) Limited in joint venture with Palmetto Trading Limited at a contract sum of ZMW 1,957,714,217.32 (VAT inclusive). The scope of works involves the upgrading and widening of approximately 95 kilometres of road to bituminous standard. Consultancy services for the project are being provided by ILISO Consulting Zambia Limited.
Speaking during the media tour, RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager, Anthony Mulowa, said works commenced on December 16, 2025, with overall progress currently estimated at 11 percent.
Mr. Mulowa said that the contractor has intensified activities on site following the mobilisation of additional equipment.
“Following the mobilisation of additional equipment, and with favourable weather conditions prevailing, the contractor has intensified works,” Mr. Mulowa said.
In addition to the main works, Mr. Mulowa said that the remedial works which had been undertaken intended to ensure that communities and road users continue to access the corridor safely while full-scale construction activities progress.
The project is expected to significantly improve connectivity between key districts in Luapula Province, enhance the movement of people and goods, and support economic growth in the region.
The Nchelenge–Chienge Road is a strategic transport corridor in Luapula Province, linking the districts of Nchelenge, Kashikishi, Mununga and Chienge near Zambia's border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The route plays a vital role in facilitating trade, access to social services, fisheries, agriculture and cross-border economic activities.
Once upgraded to bituminous standard, the road is expected to reduce travel times, improve road safety, lower vehicle operating costs and promote economic development in the northern part of Luapula Province.
The project forms part of Government's broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at improving connectivity and unlocking the economic potential of rural and border communities.
