RDA MOBILISING TO COMMENCE EMERGENCY WORKS AT LUNZI BRIDGE
The Road Development Agency (RDA) is mobilising equipment in readiness for emergency works after the approach road at Lunzi Bridge on the Chama-Lundazi Road was washed away following a heavy downpour.
The area experienced heavy rains for two days, from February 29 to March 1, 2024. As a result, the Chama-Lundazi Road in Eastern Province was cut off at the Lunzi vented drift.
A 15 metres section of the approach road to the vented drift on the Chama side was washed away. River weeds brought by heavy water current blocked the pipe culverts, which led to water overtopping.
The immediate intervention involves unblocking the pipe culverts in order to allow the water to flow, thereby reducing the water level at the cut off section to pave way for the construction of a diversion in order to restore traffic flow.
The team on site would then proceed to extend the existing vented drift by adding more lines of pipe culverts at the washed away section.
Our Engineers are working around the clock and the weather permitting, works on the diversion will be completed within five days.
